Upside Down Tomato Garden – Grow Tomatoes Without a Garden
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bill_L_Rowe] Bill L Rowe
For those with very limited growing space they can dedicate to a garden, the upside down tomato garden is a fantastic choice. This nifty design will allow you to grow juicy, delicious tomatoes in any setting. Whether the only space you have is a deck, patio, balcony, or terrace, you can easily grow tomatoes.
The way the upside down tomato garden works is rather than planting the plant in the ground, you are going to utilize a hanging planter and allow the plant to grow out from the bottom. Hanging planters are easy to find and relatively cheap to purchase. You can find them in all sizes and they are ideal for this purpose. The only thing you will need is the plant and potting soil.
With this design you will find that the hassles of maintaining a normal garden are not a problem now. You won’t have to worry about weeding, tilling, and so forth. When you growing season is over you can just store your planter until next season.
Many people find that they grow larger tomatoes when using an upside down planter. This is due to the fact that water is more accessible to the roots because of the planter design.
You can purchase a kit or make your own upside down tomato planter. It really isn’t that difficult to craft on your own. Most people prefer to use a large bucket and a few other cheap materials to create the planter. But if you don’t mind spending a few extra dollars, the work can be avoided by purchasing a premade kit. These are usually more decorative too!
You will need to take care to use fertilizer. Select one with a low nitrogen level. Since this is a self contained unit you will need it to provide the nutrients necessary for the plant to thrive. Aside from fertilizer, the only other maintenance you will need to perform is watering.

Tomatoes are really very very healthy, google “Tomato Health Benefits” =) you’ll start liking ‘em.
I know it looks fucky, but is there any advantage of keeping the plant in that manner ? I am sure nature did not intend it that way, and it would probably yield the same amount of tomatos as if you hand had the plant upright.
The way to do this is:
Don’t put anything in the bucket, put the plant thru leaving most of the plant in the bucket for better roots, put the moss or news paper around the bottom of the hole and fill with soil. WATER often these dry out fast, not like ground grown. I do them both ways and there is a huge difference in the watering. Then prune every week or two….
Plant them in the ground if you can. Container plants need to be watered daily and twice daily if its hot. This can be a real chore.
Determinate means they produce all their fruit at once. They can be either heirloom or hybrid depending on the plant.
I hate tomato
Great video!
Are the determined tomatos hybrid tomatos?

Best video on this subject by far.
How does the water drain out? Does it go down the same hole the plant is in? Wouldn’t that get the plant all wet?
ehh…leafs and new growth turn up tword sun , wind is still an issue , imho normal and stick a small pepper or somesuch in bottom of it.
Won’t it grow toward the sun? Which means the stem will want to go up while it really needs to grow dow, Problems will loom as it gets very large.
why didnt you put the plant in first?
Great video and excellent presenter….And I should know..I’ve worked with the best!
Throw a handful of epsom salt in there too, while you’re at it.
I’m not in the NW but this is stil worth watching. Thanks for posting, very informative!
